A Blossoming Future: The Roderick Gay Botanical Garden Takes Root in Ward 4 of College Park

A new era of natural beauty and community enrichment is unfolding in College Park’s Ward 4 district! The City of College Park has officially signed a historic lease agreement with Fulton County to transform the Camp Truitt site into Georgia’s newest botanical garden—just minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

A Vision Decades in the Making:

For nearly 30 years, Council Member Roderick Gay, a lifelong horticulturalist, has championed the dream of bringing a world-class green space to South Fulton. Now, that dream is becoming reality with the Roderick Gay Botanical Garden, a tribute to his unwavering dedication.

“This garden will be an incredible addition to our community—offering residents and guests a peaceful urban oasis to enjoy nature and learn,” said Mayor Bianca Motley Broom. “It would not have happened without the commitment and vision of Councilman Gay.”

A Garden with Purpose:

Spanning approximately 32 acres, the botanical garden will feature walking trails, an educational center, and a welcoming facility. But it’s more than just a scenic retreat—it’s a cultural and educational hub. Two historic cabins will be remodeled into a Welcome Center and Library-Bookstore, providing resources on local ecology, conservation, and history.

A newly graded staging area with seating, a waterfall, and lush landscaping will host community events, fostering engagement and sustainability. The transformation of this underused land will not only beautify College Park but also boost economic development, attracting visitors and instilling local pride for generations to come.

Preserving Community Roots:

The lease agreement ensures that existing programs at Camp Truitt—including the 4-H camp, senior center, GROWL community garden, and cooperative education initiatives—will continue uninterrupted. This balance of preservation and innovation makes the botanical garden a true landmark for the region.

What’s Next?

College Park officials plan to begin development in the coming months, with the first phase of the garden set to open in 2026. As excitement builds, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a stunning new destination that celebrates nature, history, and community.

Stay tuned for updates and get ready to experience the Roderick Gay Botanical Garden—a breathtaking oasis in the heart of College Park!
